Fool's Hill Music - All Artists CDs They Live On ... in Word and Song (2023) pays tribute to the life cycle in this moving and memorable collaboration. Singer-songwriter Michael Jerling lends his poignant lyrics and melodies to author Patricia A. Nugent 's memoir They Live On: Saying Goodbye to Mom and Dad .
In a collaborative recording of music and readings, these two artists give voice to life, love, and loss as it relates to our shared human experience.
The debut live performance was held at Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs on November 12, 2023.
Note that only the nine full songs are available for individual download. There are clips of each of these songs and of four vignettes, to give you a good sample of this wonderful album.

MJ Says — I've been writing, recording and performing my own songs for over fifty years and am used to a certain way of presenting my music. So, it was a bit scary when Patricia Nugent asked me to collaborate on this project. Both of us had to leave our comfort zone to make it work: she, in distilling her book down to its essential core, and I, who usually perform with other musicians, in creating a solo version of songs that would work in performance and on the recording. It has been exciting to hear the songs take on new life and nuance. In our work, Patricia and I share a desire to both entertain and move our listeners and readers, and at times challenge ourselves and the audience to visit some uncomfortable, but profound, places in the heart.

Family Recipe (2018) is Michael Jerling's tenth album, a collection of twelve new original songs. Included are a country ballad, "In Lieu Of Flowers," a poignant look at family with the folky "Family Recipe," and a waltz-time look at European café society between the wars in with "When Words Still Mattered."
Ably assisted by many talented musicians including Peter Ostroushko (mandolin), Tony Markellis (bass), Teresina Huxtable (reed organ, accordion, vocals), Tom Wieseler (keyboards), Danny Whelchel (drums and percussion), Kevin Maul (pedal steel & dobro), Nick Piccininni (fiddle), Orion Kribs (mandolin), John Kribs (electric guitar) and Don Armstrong, Liz Hood and Carol Christensen (harmonies). Greg Montgomery and Paula Rosenberg handled the album graphics.
MJ Says - I hope that the idea of a coherent album of songs is not passé in this age of short attention spans. I try to choose and sequence the songs the way one would plan the menu for a special meal. Sweet and savory, hot and chilled, light and substantial, hoping the result will be balanced and satisfying. Hmmm… I'm making myself hungry. I hope I accomplished that goal with Family Recipe. I don't have room to talk about each contributor here, but I am truly blessed to have such talented friends.

I have always admired his workman’s pride in his craft, and now as the passing of time starts to put some limitations on touring and late night bar gigs, John has made music his mission. He started doing weekly video concerts from his home during Covid. I asked him if it was to keep his performing chops up and he replied, Yeah, and I think people depend on me to play music for them." Doug Irving’s twenty third studio release is called Heart Rumors (2022). Sixteen songs, many with his long-time collaborator Ralph Childs and other co-writers, feature his loyal stable of recording musicians Pat Severs and Shawn Fichter, and also include Matthias Donnelly on keyboards and Doug Moody on fiddle. Most of the tunes sit comfortably in the country and country-pop vein with both sentiment and a sense of humor showing through.

Johnny and The Triumphs knocked on the glass ceiling with reviews in major national and international magazines (Guitar Player, Outlook, Adirondack Life), climbing to the top of the American Play charts in France, an inquiry from EMI, and opening shows for James Cotten, Johnny Copeland, Robert Cray, Hot Tuna and Eddie Shaw and the Wolfgang. Slipstream (2021) is a collection of thirteen songs and Doug Irving's thirteenth CD in the last ten years. "Flint, Michigan," a song about the drinking water scandal kicks off the album. Romantic songs such as "Lover’s Moon," "Levees of My Heart and the title cut, define a Doug Irving recording, but there a few changes of pace with the Randy Newmanesque "Lidocaine," and a country rocker called "It Can't Be Done" (like a one-armed driver trying to roll a joint). There are two takes on a fine piano fueled blues tune called "The Color in the Blues" which spotlights Doug’s voice and is a tribute to a lost friend.

Long Time Gone (2021) is a collection of eleven original songs firmly anchored in traditional country music. Tim has a warm, rugged voice and plays guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo. Tim's oft-time stage partner Chris Carey has masterfully produced, recorded and mixed the album. Chris also added his considerable instrumental talents on bass, drums, guitars and keyboards.
Tim has been a stalwart of the Saratoga Springs, NY music community for years and has drawn on some of the area's best musicians including Chris Kyle, Thomas Bryan Eaton and Larry Clyman on electric guitar, James Gascoyne and Arlin Greene on bass, Oona Grady and Victoria Paterson on violin, and Kevin Maul and Dave Bevins on various slide guitars. Tim's son Christian contributed a piano track and designed CD artwork.
MJ Says - I don't know if Tim’s choice of the title Long Time Gone refers to the time elapsed since his last solo recording, Rainbows, but Tim has been anything but absent from the music scene. He performs regularly in NY's Capital District as a solo and in various musical combinations, as well as making annual tours to Florida and the British Isles. In any case, Long Time Gone was well worth waiting for!

Doug Irving’s Birch Bark Soup (2020) features his stalwart company of talented musicians from upstate NY and Nashville. Many of the tunes are Adirondack-inspired including "Seven Covered Bridges", "Grist Mill", "Millionaire’s Row", and "ADK Mountain Train Blues” to name a few. There also some beautiful love songs, which Doug has the golden voice to put across. Nicely played and recorded as always.
MJ Says - Doug Irving is usually good for at least one and sometimes two CDs per year, so two and a half years between albums is unusual. And Doug has used the time to pursue some atypical song subjects including Alison Krauss and trilobites. But not in the same song!

The Longest Night of the Year: Volume Two (2019), is a sampler album of previously unreleased songs of the season from Hudson Harding Music. It is a two CD set with twenty four artists performing solstice songs, Christmas songs, Hanukkah songs, winter songs etc.. Christine Lavin appropriately kicks things off with her clever tune "The Universal Holiday Greeting", a round that covers all the bases. Michael Jerling debuts a new song called "Long Shadows," and there are heartfelt original songs from Cosy Sheridan and Tom Prasada Rao. Kid Bayonne (2018) is a country/folk rock gem. Stellar recording and production by Kevin Kelley and Ray Lambiase, and a beautiful art design by Steven Fant do justice to the ten finely crafted songs. Kevin Kelley (bass) and John Michel (drums) are the rhythm section with John Widgren (steel guitar), Mark Mancini (piano), Sarah Milonovich (fiddle), Sten Isachsen (mandolin), Lanny Sichel (acoustic guitar), and Guy Valic and Mike Nugent appearing on electric guitar. Background vocals are provided by Rorie Kelley, Kate Corrigan, Abby Lane, Jim Treutline and Kirsten Maxwell.
MJ Says - A few years ago at the Northeast Folk Alliance, Ray and I were having a beer and talking music. Ray told me a story he had encountered about a place in Tennessee called Ducktown that had been ravaged by copper mining and smelting in the 19th century . It remains a toxic scar on the land today. He mentioned that he was thinking about writing a song about it. As a songwriter I know that sometimes these inspirations don’t ever turn into songs, but I was so pleased to hear him sing Ducktown a year later. Ray nailed it.

Bob's 2018 release,
My Town , is a collection of songs about his home town and his life there. He received a state grant to write songs about his community - a recorded history of the town - and three of the songs on the album come from that project: "Dunbarton," "Four Leaf Clover," and "My Town." Other songs are more personal, but still about his life and his town.
Bob plays guitar, piano, keyboard and harmonica, and sings, and is assisted by Tony Markellis on bass, Matt Donnelly on keyboards, Danny Whelchel on percussion, Don Warren on electric guitar and Joy MacKenzie on vocals, with Joe Gitto (chromatic harmonica), Oona Gradey (fiddle, vocal), James Gascoyne (banjo, guitar, vocal), Marie De Mott Grady (flute), Leah Grady Sayvetz (bodhran), The So What Singers: Lou Della Valle, Joanne Della Valle, Bonnie Warren, Bea Román (vocals), and The Grady Girls.

Hank Soto's second solo album, Believe What You Wanna Believe (2018) features acoustic versions of Hank's songs that Stony Creek Band fans have enjoyed over the years, as well as two new originals and two classic cover songs. As the liner notes say "Vocals, guitars and all other noises by Hank Soto." Sounds good to me.
MJ Says - Some of these tunes like Eagle and Political Swing have been familiar friends of mine for nearly forty years of listening to the Stony Creek Band . There are also gems like Dirty Brown Bottle that have been part of the band's repertoire in the past but are new to me. Hank is a consummate story teller. The only thing more entertaining is a Hank Soto story set to music. Even if you heard the tale before.

Mark Tolstrup's Northstar (2018) features eight new original songs and some great covers of songs by Tom Waits, Bessie Smith, Michael Eck and Floyd Dixon. Mark's gritty electric slide guitar and gravelly voice are the heart of this album, but there are also some fine musical cameos from his stepdaughter Jessica Wern on drums and vocals, James Gascoyne on bass, and Oona Grady on fiddle. Dave Lambert, Jeanine Ouderkirk and Woody Strobeck add horns, Rick Bolton plays harmonica and sings, and Sharon Bolton harmonizes, and executed the cover design. Chris Carey did a masterful job recording the album and played drums and organ.
MJ Says - The blues is the at the heart of Mark's music and it is also the heart of this recording , even when the song is outside that genre. I think this crop of original songs are some of the best he has written. Some gut punches, a few laughs, and some hard-won insights. What more can you ask of a song?

"The Poet In Me" is Bob and his band recorded "live" on March 2nd and 3rd of 2013 at Edie Road Studios in Greenwich, NY. It is Bob's first album that does not add additional musicians or instrumentation. It is a true reflection of the band and the songs during this time.
Two of the songs, "A Whole Lot Of Rain" and "There Is A Place" feature a smaller ensemble, and were recorded at Bob's Studio B in Greenwich, NY.
The band is bassist Tony Markellis, drummer Danny Whelchel, guitarist Don Warren, cellist Monica Roach, keyboardist Matt Donnelly, and singer Joy MacKenzie.
The songs tackle a variety of subjects. "Every Step" recalls the social upheaval of the 1960's and postures that all change to the better exacts a high price, so much so that we "sometimes swear we're going backwards". "My Age" is a portrait of life beyond middle age. "A Whole Lot Of Rain" was written after last December's shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

"From My Window" (2015) is Lorne Clarke at the top of his game. These fourteen well-crafted songs reflect Lorne's colorful biography and his unwillingness to simply accept cruelty and injustice in the world. Although difficult subjects are addressed, there is no despairing. Hope shines through.
He is ably backed by his fellow Canadian James Gordon on penny whistle, piano and banjo and by a slew of upstate New York musicians, including Tony Markellis on bass, John Kirk on fiddle, Teresina Huxtable on reed organ and accordion, John Kribs on banjo and Orion Kribs on mandolin. Kevin Maul plays dobro on two cuts, while Danny Whelchel adds percussion and Gerry Mckeveny adds a fine electric guitar track. Harmony vocals are by Bob Warren & Joy MacKenzie and Liz Hood & Teresina Huxtable and producer Michael Jerling adds various guitars, keyboard and vocals to the mix.

Get Me Down the Road (2015) was recorded in late 2013, and completed by Don Armstrong after Victoria's passing in May of 2014. There are appearances by some of their Southwestern musical friends: Slim Rost on bass, Michael Gilbert Ronstadt on cello, Bobby Ronstadt on accordion, Nick Coventry on fiddle, and Peter McLaughlin and Michael Markowitz contribute mandolin tracks. The recording was ably handled by Duncan Stitt. Of course the focus as it should be, is on the voices and songs of Victoria & Don. They do not disappoint, delivering twelve tunes some joyful, some poignant.

This CD is all about Danny Gotham & Friends. He chooses from a cornucopia of musical talent to showcase his skills as a sideman and to bolster his lead performances with just the right musical pairing. The Bluebillies are a close harmony singing and songwriting band who live in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Under The Covers: The Songs Of Tom Flannery, was our first download only album at FHM. It is now available as a CD as well.
As Tom himself said, "Most of these are new songs. I planned on recording them myself. Then I changed my mind. I was sick of my own voice. These songs were different. They had more space in them, notes I couldn't hit or didn't dare try to. They were more open to interpretation. I considered them some of the best I'd ever written, but the more I sang them myself, the more I heard the other voices in my head."
And a remarkable array of voices it is, interpreting a wealth of fine songs, including Tom himself on one cut. Simple production, talented singers, and top-notch songwriting add up to a very powerful collection. This CD starts out with the sounds of a playground in Dave's neighborhood and Dave Fry's latest CD is just that: a sonic
playground complete with musical hopscotch, hoops, a sand box, jump ropes, and swings. With a crackerjack ensemble of great friends and studio players, "Playground" celebrates kids-based music traditions with jump rope rhymes, play songs, and curious ditties — all set to bluegrass, folk, rock 'n' roll, and R&B, and all with snappy arrangements and engaging performances. Just like a playground this is all about making noise, moving and having fun.
Dave sings and plays acoustic guitar, mandolin and banjo. Producer Kevin Soffera also plays drums and percussion, Kjell Benner plays bass, Doug Hawk is on keyboards and Ansel Barnum blows some fine harp. In addition Reid Tre plays electric guitar, Joe Mixon steel drums and Rob Stoneback on trombone. Harmony vocals are provided by

The rhythm section of Tony Markellis and Danny Whelchel leads the way, with some really hot tracks from California-based David West (electric guitar, mandolin, and banjo) and the Midwest's Randy Sabien (fiddle). Mike Vlahakis holds down most of the keyboard chores with cameos from Teresina Huxtable and Tom Wieseler on organ, Robert "One Man" Johnson on National steel guitar, and Michael Jerling playing the utility man on electric, 6 and 12 string guitars, mandolin and vocals. Mark & Jill Sing The Blues (2020) was recorded live at the historic Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY. Mark Tolstrup and Jill Burnham take the vocal lead on two blues standards and some fine blues-inflected originals. Frank Orsini adds some tasty fiddle and mandolin. Produced and recorded by seven time Grammy winner Joel Moss.
Mark & Jill were the winners of the Capital Region Blues Network 2019 competition and competed in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis on January 28, 2020. “Sometimes when people ask me what we play, I say American music. All American music is influenced by the blues,” says Tolstrup.

Doug Irving's "Eclecticity" delivers what the title promises; a collection of Doug's songs that cover a range of pop, R&B, and country, including love songs, story songs, and songs with a message.
The CD features some fine musicianship, with many seasoned Nashville players (where the the bulk of the CD was recorded) as well as some upstate NY names. Drum duties are performed by Shawn Fichter and Wayne Killius, with Ralph Childs and Mike Craner rounding out the rhythm section. Rick DeLima, Pat Severs, Don Warren (of the Bob Warren Band) and Marc Clayton play electric guitar, and Nancy Walker sings harmonies. Doug performs on acoustic guitar, piano and vocals. Engineering chores were ably handled by Rick DeLima at Headroom Studios in Nashville, and Alan Dunham at Lylac Studios in South Glens Falls, NY.

Doug Irving spent eight years writing and recording in Nashville and that modern country pop sound is apparent in his latest recording, Fire Towers and Shanties. But as that title suggests, Doug's move back to the foothills of his beloved Adirondack Mountains has also left its stamp on this new CD. There are bluegrass and even folk flavors here, with tight harmonies and fine playing all around. Doug plays acoustic guitar and keyboards and sings all of the vocal parts. Pat Severs adds guitar, banjo, dobro and steel guitar,Doug Moody plays fiddle, and Hank Soto adds his signature B-bender sound on two of the cuts. The rhythm section is Ralph Childs on bass and Wayne Killius on drums. The basic tracks were recorded in Nashville at Headroom Studios by Rick DeLima, and local contributions were tracked at Lylac Studios with Alan Dunham engineering.

"Time Leaves Things Behind" is Ray Lambiase's first full length album and it is well worth the wait. Ray Lambiase began writing and performing his own songs as a teenager on Long Island. After travelling the college coffeehouse circuit in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, he formed his first band and recorded "Slow Dance Romeo/Who'll Run to You Now" in the early 1980s. The single received local radio airplay and led to publishing contracts with Nashville's Combine Music and Bob Dylan's Special Rider Music publishing arm. The follow-up EP "Take Me To The Movies" included six songs, and was released on Great Divide Records, a music cooperative formed by Jack Hardy during the early days of the Fast Folk Greenwich Village folk movement whose members included Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin and Bill Morrissey.
Ray performs on guitar, keyboards and vocals, with a rhythm section of Jim Uhl on bass and Cliff Hackford on drums. John Widgren's steel guitar and Kenny Kosek's fiddle are musical high points, with all around great sounding contributions from Jack Gabis - acoustic lead guitar, Mark Newman - electric guitar, John Brisotti - mandolin, Dave Eggar - cello and Gillian Sobocinski on flute. Kate Corrigan sings a lovely duet and adds harmonies.

Joe De Christopher takes on the electric guitar duties with Carl Kirby on upright bass and mandolin, Steve Mitchell on drums and percussion, and producer (and cousin) Jacob Lawson on fiddle and mandolin. Don & Victoria Armstrong's latest CD, Telling The Tale (2011), is another collection of almost magical music. Nobody else sounds like them. Their voices weave together like a Navajo rug, with well wrought originals by both Don and Victoria, Mexican songs and even a witty version of Rodgers & Hart's "Mountain Greenery". Another beautiful song, "The Moon Is A Streetlamp (On Sheffield Avenue)" is revived from Victoria's long ago collaboration with Pat Garvey ( which also produced the classic song "The Lovin' of the Game" ).
The CD was recorded in their adopted home of Tucson, Arizona by Duncan Stitt, who also plays accordion and bass on several tunes. They are also joined by members of the musical Ronstadt clan including Michael J., Michael G., Bobby, and Susie. Slim Rost plays bass on one track, as does Gilbert Brown on requinto. Victoria plays keyboard and guitar and Don picks the 6& 12 string guitar and banjo.

Dave Maswick has just released his second solo CD, "The News From Here". Alternating between pop/rock tunes and lovely acoustic numbers, Dave has never sounded better. These are songs of love, loss and redemption. As a member of two seminal bands in the Albany NY region, Blotto, and the Stony Creek Band, Dave is well known to music fans there. I think this new CD will bring him the wider audience he deserves.
All original tunes (and a cool Beatles cover) , including some fine collaborations with Steve Candlen and Joel Brown, who join him on vocals. Dave recorded the CD and plays acoustic guitar, keyboards and bass. "Light up the forest, light up the sky
Run (2012) is the newest recording from Molly Durnin. This young upstate New York songwriter has all the aplomb of an old pro. Though anchored by her percussive acoustic guitar, this music isn't folky, but rather smart, sexy pop/rock in the post modern style. Still beneath the cool there is passion in these songs. Romantic love, to be sure, but also a passion for all the wild things of the world.
Recorded at Black Dog Studios in Stillwater, NY, the production by Frank Moscowitz is spare, hip and effective. Most of the tunes feature a lineup of Steve Candlen - drums, James Kirk - bass, Pat Tiernan - lead guitar, and Nathaniel Coyne - percussion. Musicians also include members of the Albany band Stellar Young, and guest appearances from my old pals Tony Markellis and Carolyn Durnin.

Tom Flannery describes himself as "a playwright who writes songs". This time he has written some rock n' roll songs.
Teen Angst & Green Flannel was recorded over four nights in the winter and spring of 2012 at a studio in Old Forge, PA. In these days when every recorded note is digitally dusted and polished, this CD has the raw energy of a live club performance. Tom writes or cowrites all of the material and is ably supported, even pushed, by the Shillelaghs. Producer Joseph "Wiggy" Wegleski plays guitars (and uke), Lenny Mecca bass and vocals, and Chris Condel drums and vocals. With guest appearances by Tom Borthwick on keyboards and vocals and Lorne Clarke singing harmonies.
A couple of Tom's heroes are Pete Townshend and Warren Zevon, and like them this gets loud and smart. Even on the darkest of songs there is a sense of these guys just plain enjoying themselves.

VINYL Record (LP) On Top of Fool's Hill (1981) was Michael Jerling's first recording and a limited number of the original vinyl pressing in shrink-wrap are now available. Recorded at Ranger Records in Oak Park, IL, the album was produced by Randy Rice, Victor Sanders & Izzy Reinish and engineered by Victor Sanders. The album features ten original songs, five of which, "Mr. Billy Bones," "Everybody's Scared," "Marry Me, Mary Edwards," "Lullabye," and "Just a Good Boy Tryin' to Go Bad," have never been reissued on CD.
MJ Says - I had almost no studio experience when I began recording this album, and zero experience playing with a rhythm section (Click track? Click track? We don't need no
steenking click track!), but fortunately there were some talented friends there to make me sound better than I deserved to sound. And the great Peter Ostroushko flew down from Minnesota to play mandolin and fiddle on a few songs, which certainly elevated the proceedings and Victor Sanders' acoustic guitar solo on the title cut was just perfect. Great memories.
